November 4, 2009

Dear Parents,

Since we appear to have conquered those “new school” jitters and have adjusted wonderfully, it’s time to concentrate on our transition into Kindergarten.

Pre-K will begin an intensified study of letter and number recognition and formation. We will also focus on initial sounds, rhymes, science and math skills.

We will spotlight one letter and number per week. Please allow your child to bring in one item that starts with the letter of the week, and a bag with the correct number (i.e., on week four, put four cheerios in a bag) of items.

We will use these items in a show and tell format, with each child presenting to classmates.

Please encourage your child to identify words and items at home that begin with our weekly letters, with emphasis on beginning and ending sounds. Please have your child count objects whenever possible. The more these concepts are reinforced at home, the more interest and excitement will carry through to the classroom.

Our schedule will be starting with the week of:

 November 9: A & 1

November 16: B & 2

November 23:

November 30: C & 3

December 7: D & 4

Dear Parents,

Hopefully, you’ve heard all about our adventures with the Gingerbread Man last week. We had a wonderful time scouring the school looking for the little rascal! During the course of our searches, we met the staff, located exit signs and made many friends. This experience was designed to jumpstart each child’s sense of belonging, security and adventure.

For the next several weeks, we will follow a carefully developed curriculum, which consists of two themes presented in order to accomplish specific goals. This is the time to evaluate the skills and academic levels of each child. Please allow for some flexibility regarding time frame, as Pre-Kindergarteners (and their teachers) are notoriously spontaneous. Please do not share the following with your child until each unit is completed.

 School Is Cool

This unit is designed to acquaint the children with school routines, behavior guidelines, rules, rights and responsibilities. It focuses on their expectations and establishes an understanding of the function of rules as a tool to maintain a safe and fun environment for all.

 All About Us

This unit is designed to acquaint the children with each other and their families. We explore commonalities and differences, friendships and emotions, while establishing a group identity.

I thank you for the opportunity to know, teach and enjoy your child. Please know that I will do everything in my power to assure a productive, safe and joyful year at The Wilson School. Please visit www.thewilsonschool.com for general information and click on “current families” to find the Pre-k website. Feel free to call the school and I will return your call as soon as possible, or email me at dsooley@thewilsonschool.com

 Respectfully,

 Donna J. Sooley

Pre-Kindergarten Teacher
